Humming Bird Awards 2022

Narration

Am James Apolloh Omenya, a graduate of Wildlife Manage from Wildlife Research and Training Institute and Fundamentals of Ornithology from Centre of Education in Sustainability Elsamere, Kenya. I speak English and Swahili. I’m currently volunteering with Giraffe Centre where am helping to discover new birding routes, conducting birds’ inventory, and updating bird’s checklist. Am doing these as a way of giving back as they (Giraffe Centre) sponsored me by paying 75% of my course Fundamentals of Ornithology. Am a passionate about birds’ conservation and changing people’s lives towards conservation. Back then before I got into the conservation career, I used to be a poacher of small important animals; Squirrels, dik-diks and mainly killing birds using caterpol as a source of food. I also used to plant trees together with my family members without knowing that we were practicing conservation in making. When I joined campus my family members new that I was going to be trained as a ranger considering my height and the energy in me and by them hearing the term Kenya Wildlife Service. I had a different mindset and the understanding of the training though I didn’t have any clue about conservation. After my first six months in campus, I had deeper understanding of the course that I was doing, I went back home to teach everyone in my family and the people around home about conservation, this made poaching to stop, and people start appreciating nature around them. During the last month of my first year in campus I met a tour guide in Lake Naivasha who challenged by as these two questions “What are you doing now as a student that will make your future generation recognise the beauty that we see in Wildlife Conservation?” the second question was “What is your interest in wildlife management” it took me a long time to work on the two questions because they touched my heart, I used to love wildlife as a whole without any important part that am playing in it. I latter developed a great interest and strong passion in birds’ conservation, and interacting with them as well, this was after being introduced to the birdwatching by my close friend who were one year ahead of me, the first bird that I identified was purple grenadier female. I was appointed as Chairperson of Birdwatching Club for the rest on my time in campus, this propelled me to becoming a good steward to my fellow club members, at some point I was teaching people about birds’ identification though I wasn’t an expert, I did met some friends who were birders, they introduced me to some important tools used in keeping my records in the field and connecting me to many birds enthusiast as well as challenging my close friends about nature. I later secured a chance as an attachee and work at A Rocha Kenya, which is a Christian organisation dealing with environmental research and conservation. During my two years of volunteering and working with this organisation my passion towards birds have grown deeper and deeper, I was able to interact with coastal birds both in the Ocean, Mangrove vegetations, Coastal forests, lakes and rivers habitats and the importance of protecting such habitats for the current and the future generation. Meeting people and telling them stories of birds and importance of having them around us and the importance of protecting their habitats have made me to have many friends, I see them get changed, developing their interest towards conservation, this makes me not to stop but use the energy and the knowledge in me to see the work of young likeminded conservationist which am part of to grow.
