Narration

Before I begin, I have a confession to make, I support Gender Equality! I have chosen to be one of those men who are leading from the front, leading by example. I am doing this through the Zingi Women, an Environmental Documentary that is highlighting the stories of female conservationists. My name is Bernard Muhia. I am the first born of five children, 3 boys and 2 girls and one of the girls is autistic. My father was a teacher and my mother an insurance agent. My father was tortured by the police in the 1990s because he tried to stop the area Member of Parliament from corruption involving education funds. He constantly spent the night at the local police station but would not sign away money meant for the school to go to the Member of Parliament. Eventually he got sick and developed mental health issues including depression. My mother tried to help him but it got to a point she thought it was not safe for her and her children and so she left him. The government which employed my father as a teacher gave him an early retirement at the age of 32 on medical grounds. My mother struggled to raise the five of us alone given that at the time she was a house wife. She later became an insurance agent. When she was a little girl in the village, the bridge near her home collapsed and it went for months without being repaired. So my mother, a little girl then, wrote a letter to the newspaper about it and to her surprise, the letter got published. The bridge was later repaired. Without knowing this, I decided to study journalism. I guess part of me felt called to speak up for the community like my mother did and to stand up for what is right, like my father did! The reason why I run projects in support of women is so that other women won't have to face the same inequalities today that my mother and other women faced more than 30 years ago. My father was not able to be there for my mother but I have chosen to be there for all women. This is not just because they are our mothers or our sisters or our wives or our daughters, but because they are human beings! Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in her book titled, 'We Should All Be Feminists,' says "My own definition of a feminist is a man or a woman who says, yes, there’s a problem with gender as it is today and we must fix it, we must do better. All of us, women and men, must do better." She goes on to say that you can change women all you want but until you change men, you will have done nothing. This is because unfortunately, men are more likely to listen to other men about matters like gender equality. I have chosen to be one of those men who are leading from the front, leading by example. I am doing this through the Zingi Women, an Environmental Documentary that is highlighting the stories of female conservationists. We are strengthening climate action by promoting gender equality. The word Zingi comes from the Swahili word Mazingira which means the environment. We shortened Mazingira to just Zingi. Zingi Environmental Conservation is strengthening climate action by promoting gender equality and we do this by highlighting the stories of female conservationists through an environmental series and an upcoming documentary called The Zingi Women. Storytelling has the power to mobilize people around the world to effect positive change. We are a Women-led group as our Chairperson is female. We represent women with 80% of our members being female and 80% of our members being youth Our work can be viewed on our YouTube Channel here https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9-5dbm5_uDWfW_YAegihLQ
