Humming Bird Awards 2022

Narration

My name is Mwangi Muruga. I am eleven years old. I am a grade six boy in Langata West primary school which is located in Nairobi County. I started planting trees at the age of six years old. The first tree planting was in January 24th 2016. At school I participate in the environmental club. It is our duty to protect the trees and water them. The reason why I started to plant trees is because I want to save the world from global warming and also trees provide us with oxygen, electricity, firewood and gives us rainfall. In our school if you break or cut a tree you will bring twenty empty packets of milked for potting in the school nursery. My brother is the founder of a group called The Millennial Environmentalists, they go to different schools and protected areas such as parks and forests to plant trees. They also teach the pupils and community about the importance of environment. Last year we went to Nairobi national park and planted 3000 trees. Both my sisters and I planted 50 trees and above. My brother tells us if you eat fruits, take the seed dry them and the plant them. At our balcony we plant fruits seedlings when they germinate, we take them to the farm and when they produce fruits, we eat them. If we cut down trees we will have no water, food, rainfall and also animals shall not have a home and will die of hunger. In our school, the teacher in charge of the environmental club is called Mrs. Olilo. She encourages us to plant trees. She told us if we conserve the trees we shall not suffer. I like to volunteer in community service in picking up all the rubbish and take plastics and recycle them. The meaning of the 3Rs id recycle, reuse and reduce this is another way of conservation. When I grow up I want to plant as many trees as possible. When people continue hunting and poaching, they will make all species go extinct such as northern white rhino which are only 3 in the whole world. If we continue h=that way we will hurt mother nature and all the species remaining. We must work together to stop deforestation and do reafforestation. We should stop throwing trash into the rivers, lakes, oceans and dams. After hearing about Wangari Maathai, I wanted to be just like her. She was one of the first people to plant 30 million trees in Kenya. If we use cotton bags and not plastic bags, we will reduce water pollution. When I used to be a small kid, I used to eat sweets and throw the papers down. I was told to pick all of the papers around there for a lesson. Be green, plant trees and help save the world from global warming.
