As the current President of the Rotary Club of Malindi one of my legacy projects was afforestation. I have long been an advocate of making the planet greener. Our District had set a target to plant 1 million trees and I set a target to do 10% of this which is 100 thousand trees. It seemed ambitious at that time especially given the hostile climate in Malindi. Using the adopt a tree model through 18 interact clubs that we sponsor we were able to plant 7,000 terrestrial trees in schools. It has been a success with over 95% survival rates. This provided an excellent opportunity to teach children the importance of conservation. We then shifted focus and moved to mangrove planting which not only capture 10X more carbon than terrestrial trees but are vital to a huge ecosystem of birds, marine life, and community empowerment. So far we have been able to plant 105,000 mangroves bringing our total to 122,000 tress in 10 months. This was achieved by working with Kenya Forest Services and community tree planting associations. Again it gave us an opportunity to spread the gospel of trees and provided an avenue for empowerment of local communities through tree planting.
