Narration

"The nation that destroys its soil destroys itself". Soil has been damaged at a faster rate than its natural regeneration capacity leading to unsustainable use of renewable resources. This is the question I do ask myself each new day “What effects am I already seeing of climate change and environmental degradation?" Climate change raises temperatures causing adverse environmental effects around the world. Soil has become especially critical to environmental sustainability and healthy soil is more efficient at capturing carbon in form of carbon IV oxide, which is incorporated in plants as food for people, wild life and even insects. Land degradation has been one of the impacts of floods and drought. Many people are moving in search of food and water. How many of problems like these can be addressed amicably? Being an environmental activist, I had to come up with quick ways of reducing soil degradation with two main aims : First is to increase more photosynthesis and transpiration on agricultural land, that can in theory, reverse global warming that we have already started to experience. The second aim is to have more soil sponge structure and function. The popular causes of soil degradation are deforestation, overgrazing. If people are the problem, they are the solution too. With the help of my community and friends, I have been able to carry out various activities towards promoting healthy soil. They include planting of grass on some bare lands creating awareness and encourage people to plant different varieties of crops especially those with deep roots, growing plants on the land year-round to avoid having bare land hence reducing soil erosion. I have participated in various tree-planting activities to restore our forests. Currently am working on planting indigenous trees. This project is targeted to not only benefit the environment but also the community. I shared my vision and ideas with some youths in the community. My endeavors bore some fruits since I managed to have four volunteers who were willing to start a tree nursery where we will be getting the seedlings instead of buying them from outside. The purpose of planting indigenous trees to increase soil fertility and water retention of the soil thus alleviating soil degradation. During Africa Environment Day, I adopted two trees. On 19th March, I participated in river Mbagathi cleanup where we collected 21st March; I participated in tree planting at Ngong Kona Baridi. I also visited Giraffe center for nature trail where I learnt different giraffe species and different species of exotic trees and their uses. I also visited Nairobi National Park for game drive and game count. My friends and I had a chance to figure out names and characteristics of animals we came across amid our count especially giraffes and birds. By doing this it came to my attention that game counts are not just about counts but an opportunity for many lessons in wildlife conservation and management strategies and learning about ecosystems. Besides that, I attended National Environmental Complaints Committee virtually, some issues were raised and members engaged themselves to find solutions on how to deal with pollution, land grabbing and other issues raised. https://www.facebook.com/neccenvironment/videos/438884651339021/. As wildlife and environment club we hold some events that helps create awareness on the need of protecting conserving our environment and how to involve ourselves to protect the environment. One of the events held was bonfire, which was held on 22nd April 2022, I had an opportunity to watch wildlife documentaries and these are some of the documentaries ; 1. Guardians of the Loita Forest https://Vimeo.com/680885806 2. The Lions of Ol Kinyei https://Vimeo.com/680894644 3. Planting Coral Forests https://Vimeo.com/680900643 4. Small Mammals, Big Questions. https://vimeo.com/683239972 Lastly, SI do have an app called iNaturalist app which is known for plant identification. It helps me to easily identify and discover new plants. The app gives us the opportunity to share with the world observations we made about a certain plant or animal and we get to learn new things from the online community.
