Humming Bird Awards 2022
Narration
My name is Tracy Nyagochi, a second year student pursuing Bachelor of Arts in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution at Africa Nazarene University. I am 20 years old soon to turn 21. I am an active passionate and ambitious Envirmonmentalist.
When I was younger,in my childhood and mid-teenagehood, my parents would bring tree seedlings and together with my younger brother we'd plant them. I would most Gladly water the planted seedlings not because it didn't rain, No;I come from a region well known for humid conditions, but because I loved how the watering jar oozed water from it's tiny holes. I loved to collect catapillars even when I didn't understand understand that once metamorphosis occured, they were the butterflies I chased around. My dad planted pyrethrum and I gladly helped boy knowing that I was slowly developing a passion for nature's balance.
My name starts with the letter T and from that,at a tender age,my love for the giraffe originated from it's Swahili name Twiga. I have since fancied giraffes hence my understanding of the three subspecies found in Kenya: the Maasai (Kilimanjaro) giraffe well known for their dark brown star-shaped spots on their bodies that live in the rich Savannah, Reticulated(Somali)giraffe native from the horn of Africa that are covered in fine brown patches marked by bright white lines and the Rothschild (Barongo/Ugandan) giraffe, the most endangered subspecies with only 670 or fewer present currently.and easily identified by it's stockings (lack of markings on its lower legs). Human life conflicts, poaching and habitat loss are some of the reasons why the Rothschild giraffe is slowly becoming extinct.on my recent expeditios in the parks with my teams, have slowly realized a striking love for rhinos and it is my plan to start conducting more research on them.
During my highschool season I wasan active member of the wildlife club and the passion was geared up by my supportive campus, the Africa Nazarene University.I have been able to engage in tree planting activities across Kajiado county, Nakuru county among other areas as well as tree care. Literally back home our friends call our small house a nest for it's located in the middle of a small planted forest but still enjoy the fruits from the trees planted there. The beauty of experimenting is that I realized that you end up growing fruits you didn't think would grow there. I envy the serenity, calmness and active supply of fresh air, Oh how the living organisms enjoy the country!
I have taken part in clean ups along roads and rivers to reduce the non-biodegradable wastes exposed to our environment and try ensure their safe disposal mannerisms. This however, has proved a bit challenging as members of the public still hardly encompass the recycling and reusing rule. It has in turn called for efforts to create awareness to the public which we do whenever we gather for our conservation activities.
I actively participate in online zoom meetings on climate action and change in efforts to salvage and restore our climate normalcy.
I love wildlife more the reason I work with Wildlife and Environmental Club of Africa Nazarene University (WECANU), Greener Communities Program (GRECOP) as well as Wildlife Direct among another organisations in efforts towards a greener earth and care for our living organisms, those that are untended. In the near future I hope to be part of a research team on a discovery in our wild.
I have loved naming trees especially around my campus with their scientific name eg the Acacia xanthophloea that was used originally for medicinal value.
Above all, mentorship and networking are among the lessons and steps towards growth that I have made in my conservation journey. I have been able to work together with primary school pupils and highschool students in efforts to bring up more Wangari Maathais, more Fiona's, more Soinas, more Tracys, more green champions of the future.
I am a hummingbird and efforts do not halt at crowning but then, only begin to a global level. I appreciate all conservationists who are working around the clock for a greener earth,a bluer sea and a clearer and fresher air.
