Narration

Wendy Omanga is a graduate from the university of Nairobi, with a degree in Bachelor of arts in political science and communication. In 2018 December, she was crowned as Miss Journalism World Kenya representative by an international beauty pageant in Arusha, Tanzania. Following her passion for leadership and innovation, in 2019 March, she was trained by Emerging Leaders Foundation on Digital Advocacy skills to help her spearhead her advocacy in Climate Action and Bamboo as a sustainable alternative to mitigate climate change. In 2019, she was appointed one of Kenya's Global Goodwill Ambassador due to her humanitarian works and volunteering ventures. In 2020, she became an alumni of the first cohort of Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI- Regional Leadership Center- East Africa) fellowship on Sustainability and Circular Economy due to her river Nyando Bamboo Restoration project, which is called moonlight Initiative. In July 2021, Moonlight initiative started a campaign of establishing Bamboo villages in Kakamega county where the associate farmers have planted 2,900 Bamboo seedlings to mitigate negative effects of climate change. In August 2020, Wendy Omanga was got an award from Top 35 Under 35 Youth of the year in Conservation, Environment and advocacy. In July 2021, she was hired by TVET -CDAC as a consultant in developing the bamboo curriculum for the Kenyan market to be adopted in all government technical colleges. This lead to Moonlight Initiative first flagship project which singled out Bamboo as a sustainable crop, suitable to plant along river Nyando in order to mitigate negative effects of climate change. To add on it, bamboo has over 10,000 value added products which has potential to create employment to the Nyando community. In the month of June 2020 right after the YALI fellowship, Moonlight Initiative got funding and support from International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (INBAR) to facilitate River Nyando Bamboo restoration activities and capacity building on ground, by a partner CBO called Nyando WRUA. Moonlight team managed to map over 50 new farmers in an effort to map the river and create bamboo awareness. The team began planting bamboo along river Nyando in the first week of July 2020. In August 2021, Wendy Omanga was chosen as one of the bamboo industry experts for The South-South Triangular Cooperation Facility for a Bamboo Study Tour in Ethiopia where she gained insight on bamboo value addition in Ethiopia, which is meant to be implemented back in Kenya. On September 18th 2021, Moonlight Initiative was one of the organizing partners of World Bamboo Day celebrations in Kibirong’ Wetlands, Nandi county. Making her organisation the youngest partner in organising World Bamboo Day event with The Ministry of Environment, KEFRI, INBAR,NETFUND, WETLANDS INTERNATIONAL, ECO GREEN CBO and other stakeholders in Kenya. USAID/YALI Trasformation fund On December 2021, Moonlight Initiative and Bambooka Lifestyle LTD was funded USD 7000 to plant 1,500 bamboo in kakamega county for their riaparian land restoration by establishing bamboo villages in Kakamega. Bamboo Association of Kenya (2022-2025) On January 7th 2022, Wendy Omanga was voted for and appointed as the National Secretary to Bamboo Association of Kenya. FAO Forest Carbon Champion(2022-2023) In March 2022 she was chosen as one of Kenya’s UN FAO Forest Carbon Champions for IMPRESS project in Kenya, in preparing Kenya to be investor read for Carbon trading. Miss Jungle Kenya 2022 In April 2022, she was appointed as Kenya’s representative to an international beauty pageant in Arusha Tanzania.
