Hello,am Rukia Ahmed ,a teen climate activist and Environmentalist from Northern part of kenya(Semi arid area that is highly affected by Climate change).I grew up in a village in Wajir county where rain comes once in a blue moon.The temperatures are always extremely high.There is no difference between the months of the year since we don't have any specific month where we experience temperature fall or rainfalls.My community (Somali) are pastoralists and most of them are not educated ,personally l am the only Educated girl in my big family (polygamous)They don't understand the importance of educating girls.My community faces frequent droughts and famine due to climate crisis.Their live stocks are mostly affected ones and even at times humans die due to hunger.Despite these Environmental consequences they are facing,they still take part in deforestation,use of plastics and they don't understand the importance of planting trees and conserving the Environment.The main source of domestic fuel is fire wood and charcoal which are product of trees.Our leaders too don't intervene in these issues.I realized that as an individual l can be the Change maker in my community as far as Environment is concerned.I started at an early age where we came up with Environmental club and Health club in my primary school, together with my classmates l will plant trees in school,take part in clean up activities and encourage others in conserving the Environment.I got scholarship to go to high school in the capital city(Nairobi).My motivation to be an Environmentalist aroused when l saw how the environment in Nairobi is totally different from that of my village.l got hope that l can still do something to give back to my community.l got actively engaged in Environmental conservation programs such as campaigns, school strike,clean up exercise, recycling activities,tree planting and creating awareness on the environment.During the holidays l will do the same activities in my home county.l was able to bring on board other teenagers to join me in my Environmental activities.l focused on creating awareness and educating people on the need for Environmental conservation.Most people got convinced as they could relate with it practically.I also challenged our leaders to have concern for Environmental issues and address them .I got support from most of our neighbors,family and classmates whom together we used to do Environmental activities.I also volunteered with organizations that focused on Environmental issues e.g JPIC-FA where l have been an lnterfaith youth school Environmental program leader and volunteer for over 5 years.Currently l am a first year student at Mount Kenya University pursuing Education science (Mathematics and Biology)and the vice chairperson of environmental club where l introduced the Birthday tree planting campaign (we planted trees for all our members on their respective birthdays)in less than a year we managed to plant over 200 trees.We nurture the trees as well by allocating members who will water them on daily basis.I am still taking part in Environmental volunteerism where l join hands with organizations and individuals who are conserving the environment. I also took part in Environmental Education programs which are offered by UNEP and other organizations.l recently received certificate from UNEP for taking part in 4 months Program called Youth Empowerment Training Initiative (YETI)where l have done three biodiversity courses and a report among a group of four youths.I am also active on social media platform such as Twitter where l voice out for the environment and l share my Environmental progress and create awareness as well as Educate people on climate change.I am motivated by the hummingbird story by the late professor Wangari Mathai and l call myself a hummingbird and reborn Wangari Mathai. .https://twitter.com/RukiaAhmed101?t=27A11B-wpQ5mQyvEAyAnOA&s=09 https://youtu.be/gj1rFWIqThA
