I am john Wanyoike Waitara I was born in Kuresoi north Nakuru County. I grew up in village farming family and herding cattle on the Mau forest edges, where I grew to know the bush and its flora and fauna. My grandfather taught us about planting trees in our homeland. We planted trees he used to pick in the forest after heavy rains and created a forest garden with wild fruits.
I started my primary school in 1999 -2007 Mawingu Primary, this was another opportunity where our teachers taught on Important of trees plating using the Late second president Mzee Daniel Tortich arap Moi ‘Kiswahili word Kutunza mazingira na monyonyoko wa undongo’ The whole school planted trees and water them if there were no rains and did my K.C.P.E. 2008 – 2011 - St. Gabriel Secondary School Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education I was motivated and loved what Wangari Mathai did for protection of forest in Nairobi the Uhuru Garden. 2013 -2014 Kenya Wildlife Service Training Institute Certificate in Nature Interpretation and Tourism Administration. 2014-2016 Kenya Wildlife Service Training Institute Diploma in Tour and Hospitality Management. My passion for conservation became reality as I learn more about conservation and I enjoy the trips that open my Education and Career. I am also currently working as a Raptor ornithologist in a private company in Kenya. Where I work for Birds every day and love them as they help me with my ornitherapy training on the Importance of Wildlife and forest conservation.
CONSERVATION PASSION
I find it necessary for me to share my skills in conservation which will boost my career in this field. Adding knowledge and having an open my mind on how to handle issues on conservation of our wildlife and environment is what I have been sharing using Bird articles in different Newspapers and conservation Magazine such as Komba, Nature Kenya, Nature net, Kenya Museum Magazine.
This engagement on Humming Bird as a Youth competition I will upgrade my knowledge and enable me to execute my duties much more professionally. The Hummingbird competition for Youth will provide an important opportunity for building professional capacity and improving performance in my conservation work. It will offer an opportunity to acquire diverse, new skills and knowledge that will enhance my capacity to meet various challenges related to conservation. The knowledge and skills acquired will enable me to contribute and achieve both my national and global conservation goals. It will also help me grow in capacity, awareness and conservation knowhow as a Conservation on Tree for birds’ campaign in Kenya and Global.
VISION FOR CONSERVATION
My vision is to see Kenya develop into a nation that respects the existence and value of wildlife as an important component of our national heritage and economy. Further, I hope to see Africa grow into a continent that models conservation for the whole World. My career plans are to work in a research and conservation organization or as an ornithologist and Raptor conservationist.
I have trained with the Nairobi ringing group at the National Museums of Kenya in monitoring and ringing and identification of local and migratory birds. This experience has given me the opportunity to work closely with a team of researchers, who helped me to understand the importance of conservation. I also participate in the weekly Nature Kenya bird walk in conjunction with the ornithology section of the National Museum of Kenya. I have also worked with Kenya bird map which nowadays uses a bird lesser app to do mapping projects bird lesser app to encourage the conservation of Birds.
