Humming Bird Awards 2022

Narration

Hi, My Name is Muruga Tricia Gathoni. I am thirteen years and live in Kajiado county. I am in standard eight in Langata West Primary School. My school is at Langata sub-county. I want to tell you about my conservation story. In my school I participate in activities and I’m also a scout leader and a member of the environmental club. In my school, as environmentalists we go round the school compounds and collect papers. We separate things that can be recycled and the ones that cannot. It all started when I used to eat a sweet and put the paper in my pocket for proper disposal. Whenever I was traveling, I never forget to carry a paper bag where I could keep all my trash and dispose them nicely. As a scout leader I co-operated with the scout’s teacher and plan for hikes and also plant trees in bare areas which don’t experience enough rainfall. I was encouraged more by the members of The Millennial Environmentalist [T.M.E] in the way they coordinate and come together to accomplish what they want . They travel from one place to another and in different schools planting and growing trees. The first tree I ever planted was in our school with the scouts and the members of the environmental club thanks to the T.M.E, they brought us two hundred different types of trees. The second tree I planted was at Kenya Wildlife Service at the Nairobi National Park. The third time put up a nursery where I could eat fruits and put there seed outside to sundry, after the seeds were dry the day, we would plant them in containers. When we would go to my grandparents for our visit, we could take a time to plant the seedlings with my grandmother. Conserving tress is the most wonderful thing that has ever happened to me. Preserving of trees also means as protecting them from human use. When we eat any kind of fruit we should take the seeds to dry so that they can be ready for planting . As for me I like engaging in events such as planting trees or travelling round the parks to see some of the wild animals. We need trees in our lives when we cut down trees, we end up lacking water and even food and we all know that water and food is life. As a member of environmental club, I know that trees attract rainfall. We need rainfall so that our farmers may have good growth of their foods. When we cut down trees we are doing deforestation and we are also making our wild animals and birds lose their home. After hearing the story of Wangari Muta Maathai, I convinced myself to be like her and plant more trees like her. In my school I have received certificates to show that I participated in planting and conserving of trees. When I grow up, I want to stop the cutting down of trees and hunting of animals. In the past four years of my life since standard four I have gone with my brother to plant thousand of trees with the members of the T.M.E. There I have learned we should plant more trees to stop global warming. I also like participating in clearance of the trenches and rivers around my school and my home. We should all remember to volunteer in cleanups in your community. Even though we are young we can do greater changes . Stay healthy .Plant and grow trees. Thank you.
